Edward J. Jerome

Principal, The Edgartown School,
Edgartown/Martha's Vineyard School District,
Edgartown, Massachusetts

Edward J. Jerome is a highly respected educator in the State of Massachusetts and the nation. He has received the highest educational honors as an education leader.

Service is a touchstone for Ed Jerome, and under his tutelage the 400 students of the K-8 Edgartown School extend their education experience into all parts of the community by performing 10 hours of community service each year. Jerome has also strengthened community-school partnerships by encouraging more than 100 talented residents of the island community to serve as mentors, teach mini-courses, and assist with arts and enrichment programs. As a result, Edgartown students have recorded some impressive achievements, including top honors in the Boston Globe stock market competition and a state essay contest.

Another way in which Jerome has integrated school and community is through a collaborative program with the police department, which sends officers to the school to instruct students on safety and drug prevention, and to accompany them on field trips. Jerome's educational philosophy is both straightforward and profound: "Throughout our school hang statements of our mission, collectively developed by my faculty, parents, and students. It reminds us all on a daily basis that the child is the center of all that we do."

The Edgartown School (K-8) received the National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence by the U.S. Department of Education and Jerome was recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as a "National Distinguished Principal" for the state of Massachusetts. Jerome continues to be involved in community services and in addition served for six years on the Board of Directors for the National Association of Elementary School Principals, headquartered outside Washington, D.C. with a membership of 28,500 elementary and middle school principals.

Edward J. Jerome earned his B.A. degree from Grove City College in Pennsylvania, his M.Ed. from Glassboro State University in New Jersey and his C.A.G.S. in School Administration from the University of New Hampshire.
