Vice-President,
Governance Council for the Creative Education Preparatory Institute 2
Albuquerque, New Mexico
Eddie Leonires Lucero is currently the Vice-President of the Governance Council for the Creative Education Preparatory Institute 2 (Cepi2), which serves non-traditional clients who are not sucessful in the traditional High School setting. The curriculum is computer assisted using Plato and Nova Net. For four hours each day, clients earn credits at their own pace as instruction is individualized. The remainder of the school day is utilized for mentorships, volunteer community service, service learning and/or employment. The school is enjoying great success—there is a waiting list to enroll!
Prior to his present position, Lucero served as an Education Consultant, at the
Center for the Education and Study of Diverse Populations, with
The New Mexico Highlands University and as a teacher and administrator
for 30 years in the Albuquerque Public Schools, Albuquerque, New Mexico.
He worked with Native American Schools in the rural
areas of New Mexico and served as a Cluster Leader Principal where he supervised
12 Valley High School Cluster schools, Kindergarten through 12th grade,
while also serving as Principal of Griegos Elementary School.
When Lucero arrived at Griegos Elementary School, he found daily fights
and insolent behavior at all grade levels. Working with teachers, parents,
and the business community this atmosphere quickly changed. Under Lucero's
leadership a range of new and fascinating activities were introduced.
For example, he started a Young Authors program. Using computers and desktop publishing
technology that Lucero obtained from the business community, every youngster
wrote, edited, and published a book to share at a special conference.
Some students wrote articles that were broadcast on a local radio station—Albuquerque's
first school-business partnership—as public service announcements. He also initiated academic programs focused on reading, writing, and arithmetic. Under his leadership the school became a center of academic
excellence. As a result the State of New Mexico recognized Griegos Elementary
School as an Exemplary Status school for three consecutive years.
Lucero's career as an educational leader is distinguished by the highest
professional honors that he has received.
He was elected to serve on the Executive Board of the National Association
of Elementary School Principals. Located outside of Washington, D.C. it has
a membership of 28,500 elementary and middle school principals. As a
result of his outstanding educational leadership he was recognized as
a National Distinguished Principal by the United States Department of
Education. He continues to train and work with principals both in the
United States and in American schools overseas supported by the United
States Department of State when called upon.
Lucero is also a Blue and Gold Officer for the United States Naval Academy,
Annapolis, Maryland. His duties include interviewing and verifying qualifications
and credentials for prospective Naval Academy Midshipmen as well as making
presentations at High Schools. The one page written recommendation of
the Blue and Gold Officer is a critical part of the admission process.
Eddie L. Lucero received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in education from
the University of New Mexico.
