Ronald R. Brown is currently the K-5 Principal for
Kennedy Elementary School in Wellington, Kansas. Before taking this position he was the Superintendent and K-6 Principal at West Smith County Schools in Kensington, Kansas.
During his 23 years in education Brown also served as principal of the Heller Elementary School
at the Unified School District No. 461 in Neodesha, Kansas. The pre-K-3
school is located in a high poverty, rural area. As principal, Brown with the help of his staff evaluated the
educational needs of his students and noted their low performance in
state math and reading tests. He focused his efforts in
these two areas. After studying a number of research-based programs,
he and his staff adopted the Success for All reading program and Accelerated
Math program. The results were impressive, particularly in reading. For
example, the number of students reading at grade level rose from 39 percent
to 68 percent in a single year. The growth in all areas continues and
the educational opportunities for all students have been expanded including
the introduction of technology. The way Ronald Brown sees it, a school
is "...either
moving forward for the good of the students or backward. There is no
standing still in our business."
During his career as an educational leader Brown has been recognized with many educational honors. The Executive Educator magazine selected
him as one of the top 100 school administrators in the nation. He has also been a United States Department of Education National
Distinguished Principal from the state of Kansas.
Brown received his B.S. degree in elementary education from Indiana
University, Bloomington, Indiana and a M.S. degree in educational administration
from the University of Nebraska, Omaha, Nebraska. He received his District
School Administrator degree from Pittsburg State University, Pittsburg,
Kansas.
